Ilya Shikshin 4p Wins 5th European Grand Prix Finale
The European Grand Prix is an annual series of go competitions. Participants collect so-called bonus points for finishing on the top of each event. Since 2017, at the beginning of each year, the Grand Prix Finale is organised as a conclusion to the Grand Prix from the year that has passed: it brings together winners of the tournaments and players with the greatest number of bonus points in order to determine the winner of the Grand Prix.
The 5th Grand Prix Finale took place online on OGS on 22–27 January. The event brought together 16 strongest European players from 11 countries. Traditionally, all the participants were divided into four groups of four players. Each group played out a round robin in order to determine two players qualifying to the knockout stage.
In the final, Ilya Shikshin 4p beat Pavol Lisy 2p by resignation after 240 moves. It was Ilya’s third time to win the Grand Prix Finale, following his successes in 2018 and 2020.
