Mexico celebrates 5th Mexican Go Congress
Mexican Go Association celebrated it’s Fifth Mexican Go Congress from November 17th to 19th at the 19th floor of the Tower of Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco in Mexico City.
This event has become an annual tradition and 2018 proved to be no exception. As usual pro presence was confirmed. Within his calendar of activities in Mexico, Ryu Soohang 5 dan pro from the Korea Baduk Association was the one who got the opportunity to share with the Mexican go community through game reviews, lectures and simul games.
Besides the pro activities, the Congress held the 5th Mexican Go Open which gathered a 43 player field who played in a 6 round McMahon system. The top player came out to be Abraham Florencia 5d who has recently had very good performances in international championships. The surprise for everyone was that of Mr. José Chacón (one of the pioneers of Mexican go dating back to the 70’s) when even though he registered as 2 kyu, he managed to finish 5th after defeating Cristobal Bravo 2d and lifelong rival Ricardo Quintero 3d.
In addition, the 1st ever Mexican Pair Go Open took place with 6 couples playing over 4 rounds. Paola Ortega and Siddhartha Avila finished in 1st place, as Paola turned out to be a very talented 11 year old girl.
Overall it was a great event. It was possible thanks to the support of the Sports Direction and the Science Faculty of Mexico’s National Autonomous University-UNAM.
